Professor Michael Cox

PROFESSOR OF SURGERY

Professor Cox has been at Nepean since 1994 when he was appointed at a staff specialist / senior lecturer. He took key roles in establishing surgical teaching to under graduates and trainees. During the development of the GMP he was involved in a number of committees and was the chairman of the options committee.

Michael has a strong interest in surgical training. He was the supervisor of surgical training for 8 years. He handed this position over to become the chairman of the NSW regional board in general surgery from 2001 until 2005 when he became the federal chairman of the board in general surgery. He still serves on the board as the immediate past chairman. Michael is on the board of GSA (General Surgeons Australia) which is to take over the responsibility of the administration of training. Michael is a current member of the RACS General Surgeons Court of Examiners. He is a foundation member of AHBPA (Australasian Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Association) and ANZGOSA (Australia and New Zealand gastric and Oesophageal Surgeons Association).

Michael has written over 40 publications in national and international journals and several book chapters. His research interests include the management of complex biliary stone disease, acute surgical care, training assessment and models for competency based training and malignancies of the upper GI tract.

Surgical research
Current and future research projects include; the management of complex biliary stone disease, complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and their management, assessment of outcomes in the ASU (Acute Surgical Unit) which is a new model of care for the acute surgical conditions, assessment of the outcomes for major upper GI resections in a the Australian setting, small bowel obstruction and laparoscopic appendicectomy.
